After-hours call script
For whoever answers your line after hours: what to say, what to book and what to pass on.
Greeting

- Thank you for calling [practice name]. Our office is closed, but I can book or change an appointment, or take a message for the team. If this is a medical emergency, please hang up and call 911.
Find out why they are calling
Most calls a dermatology practice gets after hours are one of these:
- Booking a skin check
- Asking for biopsy results
- Refilling a prescription
Booking or changing an appointment
- Front desk
- I can book that now. Can I have your full name and date of birth?
- Caller

Read the day, time and location back before ending the call.
Questions to pass to the clinical team
Whoever answers after hours does not answer these. They take a message instead.
- Anything about symptoms, a diagnosis or a treatment.
- Results, including biopsy results.
- Whether to change, stop or start a medication.

- I'll pass that to the clinical team now. Someone will call you back [by 10:00 AM on the next business day].
When to reach the on-call provider
Your providers write this list, and review it every year. Anything on it goes to the on-call provider straight away, at any hour.
